Sinkhole opens up and swallows Vernon city dump truck wheel

VERNON – A Vernon City dumptruck became stuck today in a sinkhole that formed overnight on 31 Street between 33 Avenue and 34 Avenue.

The sinkhole was caused by a water main break and water has been turned off. A detour was put in place, so no vehicles except those with the city are permitted in the area. When crews arrived on site this morning, one of the city trucks fell through the asphalt that likely became weak as a result of the water main break. 

There was no prior outward sign of the cavity beneath the asphalt. 

The city expects to have the water main break repaired by early afternoon today. Detours around the site remain in place and will be removed once repairs are complete.
