Foreign affairs minister urges Egypt to implement changes to curb violence

OTTAWA – Canada is calling for calm amid escalating violence in Egypt involving security forces and supporters of the country’s ousted president.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says he’s deeply concerned by the violence and is calling on Egypt to implement a transparent democracy to ease tensions.

Baird is urging both sides in the dispute to reconcile their differences.

The Egyptian government has declared a state of emergency after security forces used bulldozers and armoured vehicles to clear two sit-in camps full of Mohammed Morsi’s supporters in Cairo.

Egypt’s health ministry says the death toll is nearing 100.

Britain’s Sky News says one of its cameramen has been killed in the violence.
