Tropical storm Gabrielle expected to bring rain to Atlantic Canada: forecasters
HALIFAX – Forecasters in Halifax say heavy rainfall will likely pound parts of Atlantic Canada later this week as tropical storm Gabrielle churns northward.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre says the storm has passed Bermuda and is expected to drench Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and western Newfoundland as early as Friday morning.
The centre says there are a range of forecast models on Gabrielle’s location, timing and intensity, but heavy rains are expected.
Forecasters say gale-force winds — meaning winds of 61 to 90 kilometres per hour — will likely develop ahead of the storm over southern Maritime waters early Friday before spreading to Newfoundland waters on Saturday.
Models show wave heights up to six metres are possible once Gabrielle enters Canadian waters.
