3 wounded as Tuareg rebels clash with Malian army in first clashes since ceasefire

DAKAR, Senegal – A spokesman for Mali’s military said Tuareg rebels opened fire on a Malian military patrol near the village of Fouita, close to the Mauritanian border. The Tuareg rebels known as the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad confirmed the clash, which took place Wednesday.

Capt. Modibo Traore told The Associated Press that three Malian soldiers were evacuated for treatment, after sustaining minor wounds.

The fighting is the first to break out between the two sides since June, when the rebels signed an accord, agreeing to a cease-fire in order to allow presidential elections to go ahead on July 28. The rebels also agreed to garrison their fighters, but the election went ahead even though rebel fighters were frequently spotted outside their assigned bases, in violation of the accord.
