iN NUMBERS: BC’s World Cup fever goes on and on

It’s the world’s game, but Canada hasn’t typically done very well in the FIFA World Cup. Our losing streak of, well, forever ended when our team beat Qatar, June 18, but there are more interesting numbers than just the score for the country’s first win.

Here are the numbers:

  • 6: That’s how many goals Canada scored in Vancouver against Qatar.
  • 1: That’s how many games Canada has ever won in the World Cup.
  • 1: Snapped leg on a midfielder.
  • 28: That’s Canada’s ranking in the World Cup.
  • 36: Years. That’s how long the World Cup qualifying drought was for Canada. We qualified in 2022 but before that the last time the country qualified was in 1986.
  • 1.15: Million dollars. That’s how much a reseller was trying to get for a ticket to see Canada play Switzerland.
  • 104: Games are in the FIFA World Cup tournament in total: 13 in Canada, 13 in Mexico and the rest in the U.S.
  • 1,248: Athletes are playing in the World Cup.
  • 114: Million dollars. That’s how much it cost BC to host the tournament.
  • 350,000: People are expected to come through BC Place for the event.
