Election signs popping up
KAMLOOPS – It is that time again. The time when election signs pop up at nearly every intersection in the city.
It can look a little messy when you have nearly 50 candidates vying for a vote in the civic election — though not all are installing signs — and the city has few regulations around where these signs can be put up when it comes to public property.
Corporate Officer Cindy Kennedy says the main regulation the city has on election signs is that they cannot be placed on any manicured lawn or park space maintained by the city, and for the most part that is to protect the sprinkler systems.
Signs also can’t impede intersections or pedestrian walkway sight lines for obvious safety reasons.
One of the busiest corners for signs, Kennedy points out, is at Notre Dame Drive and Hillside Drive. In the provincial elections it became the grounds for idle signage fun with the NDP and Liberal candidates using signs to spell out messages from ‘VOTE :)’ to ‘NDP’ on the Kenna Cartwright Park hillside. Coun. Nelly Dever took some inspiration from the provincial candidates and put up her own message nearby this weekend, a big smiley face.

With having all these signs all over the place it is distracting to moterists. People stop for red lights and they are to busy reading the signs to go when the light turns green. I think the signs should be band and not be allowed to be put up. One of these days there will be an accident then what?
