Star Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan takes silver at Finlandia Trophy

ESPOO, Finland – Patrick Chan won the silver medal on Sunday in men’s competition at the Finlandia Trophy figure skating competition.

The three-time world champion from Toronto finished with a score of 248.73 points, behind Nathan Chen of the U.S., with 256.44.

Maxim Kovtun of Russia was third at 229.57.

Chan was third after Saturday’s short program, but Kovtun tumbled from first to third after the free skate.

The Finlandia Trophy was Chan’s first event with new coach Marina Zoueva, the former coach of Canadian ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

“I had a great start to my free skate which really showed how well my training’s been going,” Chan said after the short program. “I haven’t been this ready this early in the season in the past.

“I got a lot of confidence and learned a lot about the program. I’m happy with the result and I know I’m going to get better.”

Canada’s three entries each won a medal at this event.

World champions Meagan Duhamel of Lively, Ont., and Eric Radford of Balmertown, Ont., won gold in pairs and Kaetlyn Osmond of Marystown, N.L., won gold in women’s singles on Friday.
