Car hits Kamloops building, causes natural gas leak

Fire crews shut down a Kamloops street for hours Tuesday night after a car struck an office building.

The crash didn't appear to obstruct the street, but it did strike a natural gas connection to the building. Firefighters shut down the area around 1 Avenue and St. Paul Street in response as they awaited Fortis BC on May 14.

A firefighter at the scene said the driver claimed to have ran out of fuel and the engine shutdown. That led to a loss of braking power and, leaving the road and rolling down the slope toward a building, the car struck the gas line.

Fortis crews dug below the road nearby and closed the gas line Tuesday night, while the building at 388 1 Avenue remains disconnected from Fortis gas this morning, May 15.

It's not clear whether there were any injuries or how long crews were at the scene until Fortis closed the gas line.
