At least 4 dead in Haiti from regional cold front’s rains
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haitian officials say at least four people have died over the weekend from sporadic rains that have drenched the Caribbean country and flooded homes.
A Monday statement from Haiti’s Interior Ministry says the dead include two men swept away by floodwaters. A couple was killed when a wall collapsed on them.
The ministry puts the number of flooded houses at roughly 2,680. They say those homes are mostly in Nippes department, along Haiti’s vulnerable southwestern peninsula.
Severe deforestation and dismal drainage mean even moderate rains routinely claim lives in Haiti. Denuded hillsides and ramshackle housing make the poor Caribbean nation especially sensitive to flooding and mudslides.
Meteorologists say a cold front has produced rains and thunderstorms over Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and other nations in the region.
