Vandalized cafe may be linked to municipal election

OLIVER – An Oliver cafe owner says he won’t take election signs down, even after his business was vandalized in what appears to be anti-election behaviour.

John Micka, owner of Sunshine Cafe in Oliver has to replace his cafe-front window after it was shot at by a pellet gun. The shot left several small holes in the window that held an election sign for candidate Joel Malcolm, one of three candidates running for office of Electoral Area C with the Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen.

Micka says he won’t involve the police because their investigation would be more intrusive than the actual damage done to his property. And even though he will pay for a replacement window out of his own pocket, he won’t take the sign down.

“The sign stays,” he says.

Micka does not know who shot the pellet gun or what their intentions were, but says there is no point involving police because they won’t be able to find who did it anyway.
