Century-old heat record broken in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – As predicted, the mercury soared enough in Kamloops today to break a 120-year-old temperature record.

According to Environment Canada, the latest temperature recorded at the Kamloops Airport was 38.8 C, which beats out the record set back in 1898 of 37.8 C, making today the hottest Aug. 9 in history for the city.

The latest data shows temperatures in Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon didn't quite beat their respective outstanding records today.

The good news for Kamloops is that the smoke from wildfires across the province has cleared earlier than expected, although it's not known yet if the sky will stay clear into the weekend.

Kamloops didn't quite reach its predicted high temperature of 40 C today, and things are expected to cool down this weekend with predicted showers and temperatures in the mid-20s.
