Rising star: Oleksiak wins second medal in Rio with silver in 100 butterfly

RIO DE JANEIRO – Canada’s Penny Oleksiak has her second medal of the Rio Olympics after taking silver in the women’s 100-metre butterfly.

The 16-year-old from Toronto finished with a Canadian and world junior record time of 56.46 seconds to earn her second medal in as many nights.

Oleksiak also helped Canada win bronze in the 4×100-metre relay yesterday, swimming the anchor leg.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom won gold in a world-record time of 55.48 seconds, and American Dana Vollmer finished third in 56.63 seconds.

Oleksiak was third at the turn, but closed strong over the final 50 metres.

“The first few seconds after I touched the wall I didn’t look back. I was just trying to catch my breath,” she said. “I wasn’t even sure I’d even medalled until I looked up and saw the Canadian flags in the air around me.

“Getting to see that and getting to see that you medalled is just an amazing feeling.”
