April flowers and snow showers possible in Deep South

ATLANTA – Instead of just April flowers, forecasters say some people in the South could wake up to April snow showers.

The National Weather Service predicts a wintry mix of precipitation early Tuesday in northern Georgia, but no snow accumulation is expected there.

But it could be cold enough for snow mixed with rain in counties near Interstate 85 in South Carolina. Forecasters say if the snow is heavy enough, there could be brief accumulation likely under 1 inch (2.5 centimetres) on grassy surfaces.

The Greenville area hasn’t seen April snow since 2007 and hasn’t had a measurable April snow since 1987 when 0.3 inches (0.8 centimetres) fell.

Forecasters say the system that could cause snow may also cause flooding in areas in Charleston that go underwater when tides are unusually high.
