Be prepared for traffic delays on the Coquihalla Highway for the next few months.

Starting tomorrow, July 3, weekday traffic will be narrowed to two lanes at Carolin Bridge, about 25 km north of Hope on the Coquihalla Highway, according to a Ministry of Transportation media release. The bridge will be resurfaced, with concrete repairs and bearing replacement lasting though to the end of October.

The ministry says from Sundays at 8 p.m. until Sunday's at 8 p.m. the highway will be reduced to one lane each way.

On the weekends, there will be a second lane opened in one direction only. The extra lane will be on the northbound side of the highway on Fridays and Saturdays and southbound on Sundays.

To accommodate the extra lane, each lane will be narrowed from five metres to 3.8 metres, the ministry says.

The ministry recommends travellers avoid peak times, which are:

  • Southbound: Fridays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Sundays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; holiday Mondays noon to 6 p.m.
  • Northbound: Fridays noon to 4 p.m., or 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on long weekends.
