United States beats Canada East 3-1 at 2016 world junior A challenge

BONNYVILLE, Alta. – Bobby Dow scored the lone goal for his team as Canada East dropped a 3-1 decision to the United States on Tuesday in preliminary-round play at the 2016 world junior A challenge.

Despite the loss, Canada East still earned a bye into the semifinals of the six-team tournament due to goal differential, while the U.S. will meet Switzerland in one of Wednesday’s two quarter-finals.

Nick Swaney, Isaac Johnson and Collin Adams scored for the Americans (1-1-0), who got a 24-save outing from Dayton Rasmussen.

Stefano Cantali stopped 42-of-45 shots for Canada East (1-1-0).

Earlier in the day, Ivan Chekhovich scored 4:55 into overtime to lift Russia over Switzerland 6-5.

The victory secured Russia (2-0-0) a spot in the semifinals.

Canada West (1-1-0) will play the Czech Republic (1-1-0) in Wednesday’s other quarter-final.
