First supermoon of the new year makes its debut

Keep you eyes peeled for the first 2020 supermoon.

Called the Full Worm Moon, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, the moon will reach its peak Monday, March 9 at 10:48 a.m.

“This full Moon will also be the first of three supermoons in 2020—the other two occurring in April and May. 'Supermoon' is the popular nickname given to a full Moon that coincides with perigee, which is the point in the Moon’s orbit of Earth where it’s closest to our planet,” according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

“While at perigee, the full moon appears a bit brighter and about seven per cent larger than a typical full moon. However, don’t go out on the night of March 9 expecting to see a Moon that’s noticeably more massive,” according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

Historically, full moon names tracked seasons are were chosen as they closely relate to nature.
