City council charts next four years

KAMLOOPS – Kamloops City Council and senior administration met for one and a half days to determine council’s strategic priorities. The process started with a review of issues and opportunities around economy, infrastructure, livability, environment and governance, which were the goals from the 2012-2014 plan. Key topics that emerged in the review were explored in greater detail to determine short term priorities and longer term direction. The goals from the previous strategic plan were reinforced and will serve as the overarching framework. Council agreed on the following immediate short term priorities:

 – Cultural centre business plan
 – Official Community Plan
 – Service capacity review
 – Industrial land strategy
 – Downtown revitalization bylaw review

The next steps to finalize the plan will be to bring the full draft plan, which includes additional medium and longer term priorities, to an open council meeting for adoption.

“This planning session showed that Council is off to a great start based on their high level of collaboration in the process,” Gord McIntosh, facilitator for the session, observed.

“This has been a slightly different approach to developing a strategic plan. I’m pleased to see how council worked together and came to consensus on a diverse list of topics and opportunities for our community," Mayor Peter Milobar commented.
