iN NUMBERS: Why British Columbians are leaving the province

The Business Council of BC asked people why they were thinking about leaving the province, and as you might expect, it’s mostly about money.

There were 3,000 people in 100 different communities in B.C. who answered questions about what makes them want to leave the province.

Here are the numbers:

• 21: Dollars per hour is how much a barista named Sara from Surrey makes even though she has a bachelor’s degree.
• 11.35: Million is how much more a business owner in Vancouver pays for a warehouse compared to a warehouse in Calgary.
• 700,000: British Columbians don’t have a family doctor.
• 11: Years is how long Jaqueline from Vancouver said she has been waiting to get a family doctor.
• 12: Minute drive for Tom from Surrey to Pitt Meadows in the Lower Mainland takes more than two hours on public transit.
• 36: Per cent of those surveyed said housing and affordability concerned them the most.
• 28: Per cent said it was taxes and regulations.
• 23: Per cent said jobs and wages.
• 18: Per cent said it was public services and infrastructure like health care and transportation.
• 80: Per cent of people who left B.C. moved to Alberta or Ontario.
