RCMP are giving people a heads-up about a scam involving text messages about fake speeding tickets.
The new scam tells people via text that they have an outstanding speeding ticket and they need to give personal information or make a payment to resolve it, according to Kelowna RCMP media release issued today, Dec. 2. RCMP in Abbotsford also issued a similar release.
The scam texts include a link to a fraudulent website where victims are asked for their name, birthday, driver’s license number and some banking or crediting card information.
“Law enforcement agencies do not issue speeding tickets via text message,” Kelowna RCMP media liaison officer Cpl. Allison Konsmo said in the release.
“Infractions are only served in person or in the mail to the registered owner for the automated speed enforcement cameras at intersections for speeding and running the red light.”
People have been advised not to click any links in the message, delete the text and block the number.
Anyone who has already given out information to a scammer should contact their bank or credit card company and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to have their identity monitored.
Police are also asking victims to report the fraud to the RCMP.
Victims can call the Kelowna RCMP non-emergency line at 250-762-3300 and report it.
