Looking out the window in the Okanagan and Kamloops there doesn’t seem to be hope for a white Christmas, but don’t give up yet.
The forecast for the early part of the week shows daytime high temperatures around 5 Celsius, but there’s supposed to be a dip to a high of -2 C down to -6 C or -4 C overnight on either side of Christmas in the region.
Some snow is expected on Christmas Eve with a chance of flurries on Christmas Day itself.
“A couple of centimetres could be possible on Wednesday morning for Kamloops and the Okanagan. Not expecting a whole lot though, but you know, it’s in the realm of possibilities,” Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon told iNFOnews.ca.
“Your best chance of snow accumulations for the Okanagan and for Kamloops is gonna be Christmas Eve morning.”
There might be snow on the ground but there’s a chance it doesn’t meet the definition of a white Christmas. For it to be technically a white Christmas there has to be at least 2 cm of snow on the ground by 7 a.m.
If it’s a white Christmas, and measurable snow falls at some point on Christmas Day, that makes it a perfect Christmas.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing again heading into the weekend, but a system of cold air coming from the southwest could bring snow to the valley bottom the one day a year everyone wants to see it.
The Coquihalla Highway and surrounding mountain passes have seen serious snowfall over the last few days with a snowfall warning still in effect.
Ski resorts including Big White Ski Resort, Apex Mountain Resort, SilverStar Mountain Resort and Sun Peaks Resort are all expecting some more snow over the course of the week.
