Female pedestrian killed in crash with Surrey police vehicle leaving gas station

SOUTH SURREY — A pedestrian has been killed in a Christmas morning crash involving a police vehicle in Surrey, B.C.

Police say in a statement that the collision happened at about 6 a.m. in the 10800 block of 132 Street, adding that a Surrey police vehicle struck the female pedestrian who was then taken to hospital.

The victim later died at hospital, and Surrey police have not released any further details due to B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office taking over the case.

The police watchdog agency says the crash happened when officers in the vehicle were leaving a gas station.

The IIO says it is now investigating the matter to see if there’s a connection between the death and officers’ actions, and to see if there would be any charges against the officers involved.

Police say the crash did not result in any traffic disruption in the area.
