iN NUMBERS: Job search is ‘terrible’ for many in B.C.

Hunting for a job can be a real numbers game.

You apply for a hundred jobs and one of them might give you an offer.

If someone you know is feeling beat down by looking for a job, they’re not alone.

Here are the numbers from an Angus Reid Institute survey on the job market:

  • 37: Per cent of British Columbians polled know someone who’s unemployed and looking for work.
  • 41: Per cent of British Columbians polled said that looking for a job right now is terrible, another 36 per cent said it was bad.
  • 13: Per cent of British Columbians polled said their employment isn’t secure.
  • 37: Per cent of British Columbians polled said they are worse off now than they were a year ago, the same percentage said things have stayed the same.
  • 10: Per cent of British Columbians polled said unemployment is one of the biggest challenges in Canada.
  • 38: Per cent of Canadians polled between ages 18 and 34 said unemployment was one of the biggest issues in the country.
  • 2: Per cent of British Columbians polled are unemployed and looking for a job.
  • 6: Per cent of people polled between the ages of 18 to 34 are unemployed but looking for a job.
  • 55: Per cent of British Columbians polled said inflation and the cost of living is one of the biggest
  • issues in the country.

Sorry, the problem is not with the lack of jobs, those unable to find work are either not seriously looking or expecting upper management wages for entry level jobs. There are very few employers who are NOT looking for employees, however no one is applying. Restaurants, bars, repair shops of every kind, and maintenance companies (interior and exterior) are all short staffed and hiring.

Sadly I know several small and medium sized businesses that are struggling to find skilled employees
