Campfires banned throughout Central Okanagan as of Wednesday

A high to extreme fire danger rating thanks to the heat wave has resulted in a campfire ban in the Central Okanagan.

As of 12 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, no more campfires will be allowed anywhere within the boundaries of the Regional District of Central Okanagan.

Those caught burning can be fined and charged the cost of a fire department responding to a burning complaint.

Campfires are not allowed at any time within the City of Kelowna but that now extends to the rest of the region, including West Kelowna, Peachland and Lake Country.

“Due to extreme temperatures, dry conditions and the high-extreme fire danger rating, the campfire ban will remain in effect until further notice,” states a news release from the regional district.

Anyone spotting illegal campfires is asked to call the Regional Fire Dispatch Centre at 250-469-8577.
