Man hunt comes up short

A man hunt by the RCMP fell short on Wednesday afternoon but caused quite the commotion on the north side of the river.

A man wanted by RCMP was spotted on the Tk'emlups Indian Band Reserve on Athabasca Street and sparked the attention of not only RCMP, but of nearby businesses as they watched the police helicopter and search team stationed around the area. An RCMP canine unit was issued and multiple officers were stationed on the red bridge.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

"It was a guy who was wanted on a warrant who had been spotted at a business over in that area," he said.

Learned said the search turned up nothing.

"My suspicion is that he took off," Learned said.

The man was spotted with a group of people before RCMP arrived on scene.

"They probably came and picked him up," Learned said. "With the dog and a helicopter, it's pretty hard to get away unless you're in a vehicle."

While the search yielded no results, RCMP are still searching for the wanted man, but said he is of no danger to the public.

"There's tons of warrants out on people," he said. "It's only on the higher profile ones, we put information out."
