New building being born at Kelowna General Hospital

KELOWNA – A new perinatal care unit is under construction at the Interior Health and Surgical Centre at Kelowna General Hospital.
The new unit will replace the hospital's existing labour and delivery unit housed in the Strathcona Building. The new unit will be larger with single-patient post-partum rooms and an upgraded neonatal intensive care unit. It will also be in close proximity to the hospital's new operating rooms, also relocated to the centre.
The unit will add about $14 million to the cost of the project and will be funded by the Central Okanagan Regional Hospital District. The total project cost will increast to $355 million with $276 million provided by the provincial government and $79 million by the regional hospital district. More than 1,500 babies are born at the hospital each year.
Construction of the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre building is expected to finish in 2015. Renovations to other parts of the hospital supporting the project will be complete in 2017.
The Interior Heart and Surgical Centre will benefit patients through an integrated critical care facility supported by a full range of clinical supports closer to where people live.
