Wildfire burning near North Okanagan community being held

A wildfire burning to the east of Armstrong is now being held by the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Two highly visible wildfires were burning in the area in the last two days.

The Vlem Creek wildfire, burning about eight km east of the town, was listed as out of control yesterday but is now being held, said wildfire information officer Shaylee Sterns.

It is still estimated to be three ha in size. When a fire’s status changes to “being held” it means the wildfire service doesn’t expect it to grow outside of its existing boundaries.

Yesterday, 25 firefighters were on on site working with eight pieces of equipment to establish fire guards. Three helicopters were assisting ground crews.

"Crews made good progress on it yesterday and didn't face too many obstacles," Sterns said.

The fire is suspected to be human caused.

The Township of Spallumcheen activated its Emergency Operation Centre yesterday morning, Aug. 20, in response to the fire.
