RBC Cup: Vernon, Yorkton advance to semifinals, joining Dauphin, Carleton Place
VERNON – The RBC Cup's semifinal participants were decided by a pair of overtime games.
Derek Falloon scored in overtime to lift the Yorkton Terriers to a 2-1 win over the Dauphin Kings on Thursday in the final day of preliminary round play at the RBC Cup.
Later, Dexter Dancs power-play goal in the extra period powered the host Vernon Vipers past the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots 3-2.
The wins put Yorkton and Vernon into the semifinals of the Canadian junior A hockey championship tournament, joining Dauphin and the idle Carleton Place Canadians in the playoffs.
In the early game, Tyler Giebel's third period goal for the Terriers (2-2-0) forced the extra period, while Kale Thomson made 35 saves for the win.
Brent Wold's power-play goal gave Dauphin (3-1-0) a 1-0 lead. Michael Stiliadis stopped 31 shots.
The second game of the day saw Brett Mulcahy and Demico Hannoun score in regulation time for the Vipers (2-2-0), while Austin Smith turned aside 22 shots for the win.
Michael Prapavessis's power-play goal with 36 seconds left in the third forced overtime for Toronto (1-3-0), while Andreas Tsogkas scored in the first for the Lakeshore Patriots. Evan Buitenhuis made 43 saves in net.
Semifinal play will begin on Friday.
