iN NUMBERS: B.C. condo plan isn’t everyone’s favourite housing solution

The government has a vision to make unsold condos into affordable housing and a lot of people think the other solutions on the table are better ideas. People are more in favour of capping rent increases and reducing the amount of foreign buyers.

Here are the numbers from a Research Co. survey:

• 2,200: Unsold condos would be turned into “rent-to-buy” properties under the federal and provincial plan.
• 3.2: Billion dollars. That’s how much the government is planning to spend.
• 50: Per cent. That’s how much the government wants to reduce municipal level charges for developers.
• 51: Per cent of people surveyed in the Southern Interior think the condo plan will be effective in making housing more affordable.
• 71: Per cent of people surveyed in the Southern Interior would like to see the foreign buyers tax expanded outside of Metro Vancouver.
• 75: Per cent of people surveyed in the Southern Interior support capping rent increases at 2.3 per cent.
• 52: Per cent of people in the Southern Interior surveyed said the plan is a bailout for developers and banks who made a bad bet on the housing market.
• 63: Per cent of people surveyed in the Southern Interior said turning condos into affordable housing is about helping Canadians rather than distressed developers.
• 46: Per cent of people in the Southern Interior surveyed said they have been closely following this condo plan story.
