Students start petition for later transit services in Kelowna

Some university students living in Quail Ridge are feeling unsafe commuting to and from the UBC Okanagan campus.

This is because their area is limited to city transportation from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the weekdays only.

For many students who have later classes and people who work until 5 p.m. this is “a huge safety issue” according to a petition created by the University of British Columbia Students’ Union that represents more than 12,000 students at the Okanagan campus.

Without the bus, students are walking up to four kilometres along a high-traffic road or through an unmaintained trail that provides the danger of darkness, animals and lack of cell service, the petition reads.

The union is asking for signatures to bring awareness to the issue and get more busses or provide other safer alternatives.

The petition was started two days ago and has collected more than 200 signatures so far.

The petition can be found here.
