RCMP cruiser hits pickup that ran a stop sign in Kamloops

A driver was taken to hospital after they were hit by an RCMP cruiser in Kamloops this morning.

The 57-year-old person behind the wheel of a Ford pickup failed to stop at a 10 Avenue stop sign, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release. It travelled directly into the path of a Chase RCMP cruiser as it continued onto Columbia Street this morning.

"The police officer was unable to avoid the collision and struck the pickup near the passenger door and box, causing it to spin around and strike a parked car, before coming to rest in the northbound lane," the release reads.

The collision happened just after 8 a.m. today, March 22, as the officer from Chase was heading eastbound. The driver in a red F-150 was heading southbound as they drove onto Columbia Street.

Police say the 57-year-old driver was taken to hospital for "precautionary assessment," while the officer wasn't injured.

Kamloops RCMP is now looking for witnesses and dash camera footage of the collision. Anyone with information can contact the detachment at 250-828-3000 and city file 2023-46372.
