Kelowna’s Knox Mountain Hill Climb tearing it up yet again this weekend

What is normally a quiet, picturesque road is going to be a rowdy scene for the return of Kelowna’s most iconic, high octane race.

The 67th annual Knox Mountain Hill Climb is being held this weekend, May 16 and 17. Drivers will race up the 3.5 kilometre track going up 245 metres in elevation.

There are 78 drivers signed up this year to test their mettle on the hairpin turns in front of a cheering crowd.

Some interesting competitors to look out for Bobbie Phinney in a 1934 Chevrolet, Larry Sandham in a 1978 Mini Vauxhall Clubman and Steve Percival in a 1971 Datsun.

Driver Aran Cook of Edmonton holds the course record at 1:34.903, and the winning time from last year was 1:46.121 which was posted by Trevor Yip in a Tesla.

Tickets are still available for $40 for a full weekend pass or $30 for a single day. Kids under 13 years old get in for free.

On top of the race itself there will be a car show, food trucks, beer garden, racing simulator and activities for kids like face painting and balloon animals.

Francois Arseneault is a local cameraman and historian who digitizes old footage and he has a collection of Knox Mountain Hill Climb broadcasts from over the decades available online.

The event will also live-streamed online.
