New brewery proposed alongside KVR trail in Penticton

A new brewery is in the works for Penticton.

Penticton city council will be asked to approve a permit to allow a covered patio at 1220 Davenport Ave. at its meeting April 19. The property is the site of the Trail Store Fruit and More located alongside the Kettle Valley Rail Trail and fronting Naramata Road.

Abandoned Rail Brewing Company wants to build a brewery on-site that will provide high-quality beer made from estate-grown barley. In a community impact statement, the brewery says its location on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail and the Naramata Bench will provide a refreshing stop for cyclists, joggers, walkers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The proposal currently before the city will eventually transform the Trail Store Fruit and More building into the tasting room, with an addition to be constructed to the rear of the building to accommodate the brewery area.

The proposal includes a lounge endorsement that would allow occupant loads of up to 20 persons for indoor tasting and 113 persons on the exterior patio, with service hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

If approved next week, staff will report back to council the results of a public consultation at the May 18 council meeting.

— This story was corrected at 9:06 a.m. April 19, 2021 to change the proposed brewery's closing time incorrectly reported to be 9 p.m. by the City of Penticton. The closing time is 8 p.m.
