Interior Health says if you don’t want to do dry January, damp January is still good
It’s time to celebrate the holidays and sometimes that may mean a few alcoholic beverages with your loved ones. Interior Health has advice for a safe and healthy indulgence.
Taking the first month of the year to abstain from the booze is a popular New Year’s resolution, but Interior Health said cutting back a bit still has an impact.
“Schedule a few alcohol-free days each week. Track your progress on paper or in an app.
Switch to zero per cent alcohol beverages. The selection of non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits is growing rapidly,” IH said in a press release.
IH said that the rule of twos can help people be safe when drinking over the holidays. Limiting drinks to two per occasion or drinking a glass of water or something non-alcoholic every second drink.
Having two or less drinks per week reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer.
IH wants to remind people that drinking and drugs don’t mix. Taking substances while drinking increases the impacts on your health.
Drinking less can help increase energy, improve sleep and concentration, lower blood sugar and blood pressure, as well as lower risk of strokes, hypertension, cancer and liver disease.
Interior Health said there are lots of resources to help cut back on drinking.
“Whether you’re cutting alcohol out of your life completely or cutting down, you may notice some changes in the way you feel,” the release said.
