Blue Jays put Tulowitzki on 15-day DL with quad strain and activate Loup

TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right quadriceps strain and activated left-hander Aaron Loup from the 15-day DL.

Tulowitzki missed two games this week and struggled Friday night against Boston. He struck out four times and made a throwing error in Toronto’s 7-5 win over the Red Sox at Rogers Centre.

Tulowitzki said an MRI exam revealed a low-grade strain. He’s eligible to return June 12.

The veteran shortstop was originally pencilled in to serve as a backup Saturday afternoon against the Red Sox. The Blue Jays announced the roster moves about 90 minutes before the game.

Backup infielder Darwin Barney replaced Tulowitzki at shortstop. Barney entered play with a .301 average with two homers and six RBIs over 28 games.

Tulowitzki is batting .204 with eight homers and 23 RBIs in 46 games.

Loup, meanwhile, had been out since suffering a forearm flexor strain at spring training. He began a rehab assignment on May 15.

Loup had a 4.46 earned-run average with 46 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings last season.
