Inquiry head appoints two lawyers to commission looking into Dunphy shooting
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Two lawyers based in Newfoundland and Labrador have been appointed to an inquiry looking into the death of a man who was shot by police on Easter Sunday 2015.
Sandra Chaytor and Kate O’Brien were named as co-counsel to the commission examining the death of Don Dunphy at his home in Mitchell’s Brook, about 80 kilometres southwest of St. John’s.
Justice Leo Barry is leading the probe, and is expected to produce a report by July 1, 2017.
Dunphy was shot by a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary who served on then-premier Paul Davis’s security detail.
A retired judge who reviewed the RCMP’s probe and the pathology reports said the officer fired four shots — including one to Dunphy’s head from about one metre away.
The inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation, including the officer’s solo visit and the fatal shot.
