‘American Idol’ to receive TV academy’s Governors Award

LOS ANGELES – “American Idol” is receiving the TV academy’s 2016 Governors Award for its impact on television.

The academy said Friday that the Fox singing contest was more than a hit, citing its use of social media, influence on the pop-culture conversation — and the talent-show imitators it spawned.

The Governors Award honours achievement that goes beyond the scope of Emmy Award recognition.

“American Idol,” which ended its 15-year run on Fox this spring, was a ratings blockbuster but never captured top Emmy honours in the reality-competition program category.

It isn’t up for the award at the Sept. 18 Emmys airing on ABC, but host Ryan Seacrest has a final chance to be honoured as best reality series host.
