UPDATE: 24-year-old from Kelowna wins $1-million lottery

KELOWNA – Brittany Powell was filling up her car at a gas station with some friends when she decided to check her Lotto Max ticket.

“All of a sudden bells started going off. I was excited because I thought maybe I had won $50,000 and could pay off my jeep,” she says. “But I couldn’t believe it when the clerk told me I had won $1 million.”

A release from the B.C. Lotto Corp. says the 24-year-old, who bought the ticket in Cache Creek, has been playing Lotto Max since she was 19-years-old.

Powell won a $1 million Maxmillion prize in the May 29, 2015 draw. She says she plans on spending some of the winnings on a backpacking trip and paying off some bills, including her Jeep. She admits her very first purchase will be a meal and a beverage from her favourite pub.   

Powell is the fifth lotto winner in B.C. in the last 30 days. The Greenings of Vernon won $5.8 million in April, Tanya Williams of Enderby won $1 million last week and a ticket bought in Penticton for Saturday's Lotto 6/49 draw is a $1-million winner as well.

The next Lotto Max draw on June 5 is for $50 million jackpot plus 50 Maxmillions.
