Police: Suspect dies in gunfire exchange with marshals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Authorities say a suspect wanted for the attempted murder of a police officer has died after trading gunfire with the U.S. Marshals Service after a call near West Virginia University.

Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Alex P. Neville says the shooting occurred shortly after noon Wednesday after they attempted to arrest the suspect.

A statement from the Morgantown Police Department says the suspect fired at marshals while trying to flee. At least one marshal shot back, and the suspect was found dead at the scene.

Police say the area around the college was opened up again about 1 1/2 hours later. A university spokeswoman says classes are continuing as normal.

Officials haven’t released the names of the suspect or the officers involved.
