Kamloops worker shot in chest with nail gun did not have access to instruction materials

KAMLOOPS – A Kamloops construction company must better inform its employees on the use of nail guns after a man accidentally shot himself in the chest last month.

According to WorkSafe B.C. inspector Vince Strain, a worker on a Columbia street construction site was trying to attach a brace on architectural trusses with a nail gun on May 6 when it went off. The tool fired a three-inch nail into his chest and the journeyman carpenter was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital.

After concluding his investigation, Strain noted instruction material on the tool was not available to staff.

The authority ordered Wrabel Brothers Construction to submit a report documenting management communicated the safe use of pneumatic nail guns to its staff. The report is due July 5.

An update on the worker's condition was not included in the WorkSafe B.C. inspection report.

  1. No offense to the guy, but is this what the government really wants of a Journeyman worker? We are suppose to be the Best of the Best.Although the worker should had known, I personally blame the government and employers for totally under-minding the apprenticeship system I this province. We use to have such a good Apprenticeship Board, now if you want that style of learning, it’s not from the non-union sector.

  2. I agree with Justin Woodhouse. I wonder if the guy had a cell phone on him? you can any info you want on it. Even how to use a nail gun! This generation are raised not to think for themselves, as everything gets done or handed to them, so they don’t have to think for themselves.

  3. seriously? Why not hold the company responsible for their workers texting and driving as well as driving while intoxicated while we are at it! While I wish the gentleman a speeding recovery, he is also a “journey” carpenter and should know how to use a air nailer and be familiar with it’s safe use, as part of his everyday bag of tools. If you use one nailer, they are all the same. Workers also need to be held accountable not just employers.
