SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Latest on the police shooting in Sacramento (all times local):

Family members of 50-year-old Joseph Mann are questioning the events that led up to his fatal shooting by Sacramento police.

Two officers shot Mann on Monday morning as he turned toward them while holding a knife.

His brother, Robert Mann Sr., tells The Associated Press that Mann was never violent or carried guns. He wants to know why police didn’t use a Taser on his brother instead of shooting.

Police were responding to calls of a man waving a knife and acting erratically. They say they received reports that Mann had a gun in his waistband, but none was found.

Robert Mann and other family members say Joseph Mann was suffering from mental illness following the death of his mother several years ago. He was homeless and living in Sacramento.

The Sacramento County coroner has identified a man fatally shot by Sacramento police as 50-year-old Joseph Mann.

Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Bryce Heinlein said Tuesday that two officers appear to have been following protocol when they shot Mann on Monday as he turned toward them while holding a knife.

Officers are required to use the least amount of force they feel is needed. Heinlein says Mann brandished a lethal weapon so officers appear justified in shooting him multiple times.

Internal investigations are continuing, overseen by the district attorney’s office and Sacramento’s Office of Public Safety and Accountability.

Investigators are interviewing the officers and reviewing surveillance camera footage.

Both officers have been placed on three days’ administrative leave.
