GOOCHLAND, Va. – In a story June 28 about three people who were struck and killed by a motorist in Virginia, The Associated Press, relying on information provided by the Virginia State Police, misspelled a victim’s last name. The correct spelling is Justin Ransone.

Virginia State Police say charges are pending after a motorist struck and killed three people along a highway.

One of the victims had just stepped out of her car after striking a deer. The two other victims had gotten out of their vehicle to help the woman.

State police said in a statement that the crash happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday on a highway in Goochland County, west of Richmond.

Police said that 25-year-old Linli Xu struck the deer, and the crash disabled her Mercedes on the roadway. Sometime later, 41-year-old Justin C. Ransone and 45-year-old Amy Lee Abbott pulled their Chevy Suburban onto the shoulder and walked over to help Xu.

Police said 53-year-old Claire C. Carr was driving an Audi when she came upon the disabled Mercedes. She tried to avoid the car and veered into the three standing near it.

Police said Xu, Ransone, and Abbott died at the scene. Carr declined medical attention.

Police said the crash remains under investigation and that “charges are pending at this time.”
