Man and kids escape fire in Vernon garage

VERNON – A blaze that lit up the night sky over Swan Lake in Vernon Sunday night destroyed a garage and threatened a home on Old Kamloops Road.

Firefighters were called out about 9 p.m. Sunday, June 22, BX-Swan Lake Fire Chief Bill Wacey says. A garage was destroyed in the fire, and an adjacent home was threatened for some time before firefighters got the blaze under control.

“The homeowner was there along with his two kids, they got out, there were no injuries,” Wacey says. “They were supposedly in the garage at the time.”

Investigators will be on scene today trying to pinpoint the cause of the fire. There are reports of an explosion, but Wacey can’t say at this point if it had anything to do with the fire.

Firefighters remained on scene for hours bringing the fire under control and securing the scene.
