In this photo by Shuji Kajiyama, a Japan Self Defence Force officer checks an honour guard before the members are inspected by Defence Minister Tomoni Inada at the Defence Ministry in Tokyo. Inada inspected the troops and gave an inauguration speech Thursday, a day after being named to the position in a Cabinet reshuffle. She is known for her far-right views and is a supporter of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s long-cherished hope to revise Japan’s Constitution. She has said parts of the war-renouncing Article 9 should be scrapped, arguing that they could be interpreted as banning Japan’s military.
