UPDATE: Coroner identifies victim in Shuswap house boat accident

SICAMOUS – A young Alberta woman died in a house boat accident last Friday.

The accident happened on Shuswap Lake near the Cinnemousun Narrows about 15 km north of Sicamous Friday, July 10.

Andrea Mary Jacura, 22, of Edmonton, Alberta died Friday while swimming in Shuswap Lake in B.C.'s Southern Interior. The woman was behind the houseboat when the vessel reversed over her and caught her in the propeller.

"She had at least one leg amputated and severe injuries to the rest of her body," Pyper said.

He confirmed she had been hit by the propeller and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eleven people were aboard the houseboat at the time. Her sister was on the boat with her.

B.C. Ambulance spokesperson Preet Grewal said an air and ground ambulance were dispatched at 12:52 p.m. Friday, but no transport was required.

According to sources, the woman's leg was severed on the femur by a propeller. She reportedly bled to death before help arrived.

– This story was corrected at 7:30 a.m. July 15 to correct an early police report that 'many of her family members' were on board. Her sister was the only family member on board.

  1. The scary thing is.. I was at the shuswaps on Friday…

  2. They have an hour long orientation and designate 3 SOBER captains before taking off on the boats. Always remove the key and make sure the swim deck is clear before starting the boat. We were on the lake the week before, sad to hear this happen!

  3. I worked at a houseboat company for years, the customers are told repeatedly all the dangers and what not to do, ie: Always have a spotter at the back when backing up. This is such a very sad and tragic accident, my heart goes out to the family and friends!!!

  4. I’m ss for family and this girl taken from then so young it makes me mad when I hear that someone is killed when they have a guard that they can get that covers the propeller so sad.

  5. My heart is so sad for her and the family. If precautionary rules were followed the tragedy would never have happened. I don’t understand why these propellers do not have those cages around them. I’ve seen them on some boats. These are party boats all precautionary measures must be taken, we’ve all been on them. For what they charge the rental company should have cages around them.

  6. So many reminders.Play safe. Hug your loved ones.

  7. heartbreaking tragedy, prayers to the family.

  8. they do to each party that rents the boat.

  9. Houseboat companies tell them any time they go into reverse to have spotter at the back of boat as this has happened a few times before.

  10. so sorry way too youngrip dear girl.

  11. Boat companies should explain all hazards to stay away from that relate to the boats.
