Revelstoke shop teacher caught taking school property home
REVELSTOKE – A Revelstoke shop teacher is being watched closely after he was found using the district’s tools for his own projects at home for the last three years.
Last month, Michael David Howard agreed he misused district funds and property for his own personal gain with the first recorded incident in 2011. Howard used a district account to purchase an $895 mitre saw for a friend. He then repaid the district for the purchase in four separate instalments over three months without interest.
In 2012, Howard took a vinyl sign maker from the school and installed its software on his personal computer. He used the piece of equipment at home before returning it two years later.
In 2014, Howard did not notify the school or the district when he took a $220 power drill and batteries home for personal use. He replaced it later that year after a co-worker asked Howard for batteries. In February of the same year, during a leave of absence, Howard took the school's tile cutter worth $1,000 and temporarily replaced it with his own personal tile cutter. He returned the equipment in June after the district informed him his conduct was being investigated.
Howard agreed to the facts on June 15, 2015, and was suspended from work for ten days without pay. Further conduct breaches could result in further discipline.

One of my favourite people. Is this article really necessary? Seems like an issue that should have been respectively kept private instead of published as “news”.

Trashy Journalism. We should be passing judgment on the snake who slipped this nonsense story (personal vendetta?) to the reporter who failed to even take credit for it by printing their name under the title.

This is crazy. Mr Howard never stole a thing. He borrowed and returned everything. Mr. Howard is an awesome teacher who always encourages his students.

he happens to be one of the best and most well liked teachers at the highschool.

wow poor guy, what’s the harm he returned or repaid everything, what is dishonest about that? Teachers put up with a lot for little pay, leave the guy alone….and worry bout real crime.

Jessica, we publish to inform. We are aware some commenters seek to “shame” but others, like yourself, thankfully return some reason to discussions.

It’s ridiculous that this was posted publicly. This should be a private matter. He is a great teacher and kind person, what good does humiliating him do?????
