Egypt officials arrest Italian suspected of smuggling drugs

Cairo airport authorities on Friday arrested an Italian passenger for allegedly attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, a customs official said.

Customs inspectors searching the luggage of the traveller arriving from Milan found 644 pills and several glass bottles of illegal painkillers, Gamal Abdel-Fattah, a senior official at the Customs Authority said.

Abdel-Fattah didn’t identify the suspect but said he was of Egyptian origin and was referred to local prosecutors after his arrest.

Many drugs that can be used as heroin substitutes are banned by Egyptian authorities.
