Canadian soldier found dead in gym in Jordan returned to Newfoundland

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A Canadian soldier who died in Jordan was returned home to Newfoundland under escort Thursday.

Maj. Scott Foote’s remains were taken to St. John’s International Airport, where he was received by members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

Police escorted him to his final resting place, while firefighters stood on an overpass as the procession passed by.

Military officials say the 50-year-old from Carbonear was found unconscious in a gymnasium in Amman earlier this month.

Foote was pronounced dead after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

His death has been labelled non-combat related and National Defence officials say there are no indications of foul play.

He had been in Jordan since September as part of a team looking at ways to train the Jordanian military as part of Canada’s fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
