UN envoy says Yemen peace talks are back on track

KUWAIT CITY – The U.N. envoy for Yemen says peace talks aimed at ending fighting in the impoverished country are back on track in Kuwait.

Yemen’s internationally recognized government recently agreed to resume talks with the country’s Shiite rebels who control the capital, Sanaa, and other parts of Yemen.

The peace talks were suspended last week.

U.N. envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed told reporters in Kuwait on Thursday that both sides expressed a willingness to continue talking until they reach a resolution.

He says efforts are currently focused on releasing prisoners of war before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in less than two weeks. The envoy also called for a joint commission tasked with helping revive Yemen’s economy.
