NEW YORK – A gay rights protester has accused evangelicals who met with Donald Trump in New York Tuesday of stirring up hatred that she says led to the nightclub shootings in Orlando.
The woman disrupted a press conference that included leaders of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group, shouting: “Your hate is killing us. Your lies are killing us. You all are responsible for the hateful environment that created the attack in Orlando.”
Gunman Omar Mateen had expressed sympathy for Islamic extremists before his rampage left 49 people dead.
At the news conference, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, “No American, regardless of your political ideology or your life choices, should be living under the threat of a terrorist attack on the streets of the United States of America.”
Perkins says he believes Donald Trump shares that view.
