Train company puts up warning signs after recent deaths

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – The company that operates a new high-speed train in Florida is putting up large electronic signs at several busy rail crossings following two recent deaths.

The Palm Beach Post reports that Brightline launched a new safety awareness plan on Friday. It will include 20 signs that will be periodically moved among crossings between the company’s two stations in West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

Police say a train struck a 51-year-old bicyclist last Wednesday as he pedaled around the gates, which were down, in an attempt to beat the oncoming train. He became the fourth person killed Brightline began conducting test runs early last year.

A week earlier, as the Brightline train was offering preview runs before its debut, it struck and killed a 32-year-old woman crossing the tracks.
